La Colorada de Tacubaya is more than just a 19th-century mansion; it's a living monument to the creativity and cultural exchange of a bygone era. To understand its current relevance, one must travel back in time to meet its original host, Federico Sánchez Fogarty.
Born in San Luis Potosí in 1901, Sánchez Fogarty was not only the advertising director of Cementos Tolteca but also a tireless promoter of art and culture in Mexico. In 1931, he organized an art contest during the inauguration of the Cementos Tolteca factory, attracting artists who are now icons of Mexican art: Rufino Tamayo, María Izquierdo, Juan O'Gorman, and Manuel Álvarez Bravo. O'Gorman emerged victorious, marking the beginning of a unique connection between art and Sánchez Fogarty's life project.
Five years later, he and his wife Magda transformed their mansion in Tacubaya into an epicenter of culture and glamour, with the famous Fiestas del Tercer Imperio as the heart of their legacy. These celebrations, spanning twenty-three years, brought together poets, artists, critics, and even presidents, giving rise to a unique social phenomenon.
With such original events as the "Tés Locos" and the "All Imperial," the mansion was a spectacle in itself. During the Tés Locos, Sánchez Fogarty conducted his phonograph as if it were an orchestra, using a paintbrush that once belonged to the muralist José Clemente Orozco as a baton. Guests received noble titles in an atmosphere that combined humor, art, and performance, setting a precedent in the history of contemporary art in Mexico. The artist Maris Bustamante considers these gatherings the first steps of performance art in the country, a proto-performance that broke with the social conventions of its time.
Today, almost a century later, La Colorada is reborn by the Bernal family in collaboration with ANNEX and MASA Galeria, who have transformed the spaces of the property into a space that mixes hospitality, art, and contemporary design.
This ambitious project not only seeks to preserve the spirit of Federico Sánchez Fogarty but also to bring it into the 21st century, reviving the creative energy that once defined this mansion. MASA GALERÍA, renowned for its innovative curatorial approach, is tasked with selecting art and design pieces that dialogue with the house's rich history, while ANNEX leads the hospitality experience, which includes five bedrooms.
